.ETH vs .SOL

Looking at ENS (.eth) activity each month since 2020. Noticeable resurgence of new registrations & renewals. But it seems ENS trading (a subset of transfers) has remained lagged. Prices are in ETH terms. Looking at the (limited in data) Bonfida Name Service to get registration counts. Note Bonfida now has a new Solana Name Service program, whose new ID was not included here. But some stats are taken for October 2023 from their SNS website to add context to the overlapping programs.

While ETH Prices have stayed below the $2,000 - $4,000+ range, there has been a noticeable uptick on ETH spent on Premium ENS costs (e.g., very short ENS names like 3 and 4 length names).

October 2023 has had the most unique addresses registering an ENS since Sept. 2022, likely taking advantage of low costs on-chain to make new names with longer lifespans (ENS names expire eventually, max timespan at a time is 99 years).

Unlike new registrations, renewals have remained steady despite the Bear Market.

In 2023, users have kept up to date on their names, with a sustained growth in # of users renewing their names.

Don't want to risk your ENS expiring before the Bull Market.

NOTE: February 2020, ENS identified a contract issue and had a "migration". Everyone had to move to the new contract. You can safely ignore Feb 2020.

Here transfers (excluding mints/burns) is covers both sales via NFT marketplaces & direct transfers.

Unlike new registrations & renewals, the hype around trading ENS has not recovered since the 3 and 4 letter name hype of Summer 2023.

Both # of transfers and # of users initiating transfers has remained lagged since DeFi Summer 2022.

Comparing & Contrasting. Although Ethereum gas transactions are significant, there is roughly a 10x involvement in ENS compared to Bonfida.

Note: A new Solana Name Service program ID:

Also managed Bonfida is not included here.

Key stats taken from the SNS Stats Page show that people are transitioning between the old program and the new one.

In October SNS identified 1,327 registrations (about 2x the original program ID's October number) and 1,105 sales.

    Combining these, for Oct 2023:

ENS: ~57,000 registrations by 46,500 users. SNS: 722 registrations by 534 users on previous contract, with another 1,327 registrations (undefined # users) on the new program ID.
