Circulating Supply: Locked, Staked and Liquid

Key insights: Liquid NEAR tokens have increased over time and are on an upward trend. The staked NEAR tokens dropped from the first week to the second week of staking but continued to increase over time. The locked NEAR tokens decreased as the liquid tokens increased. The NEAR Token Circulating Supply Dashboard provides valuable insights into the distribution and historical changes of NEAR tokens. The dashboard tracks liquid NEAR, staked NEAR, and locked NEAR that make up the circulating supply.

    ✨Introduction
    • Total supply: Total supply refers to the total amount of NEAR tokens that have been created and can potentially exist in the network. This includes all the tokens that have been minted, including those that are currently being held by users or locked in contracts.

    • Circulating supply: Circulating supply refers to the total amount of NEAR tokens that are currently available in the market and are not locked or held by the protocol, foundation, or other entities. In other words, it is the total amount of tokens that are freely tradable in the market.

    • Staking NEAR: Staking NEAR refers to the NEAR tokens that are locked in a staking pool to participate in the network's consensus and earn rewards. These tokens cannot be traded or transferred until they are unstaked.

    • Locked NEAR: Locked NEAR refers to the NEAR tokens that are locked in smart contracts, such as the lockup contract, for a certain period of time. These tokens cannot be traded or transferred until the lockup period expires.

    • Liquid NEAR: Liquid NEAR refers to the NEAR tokens that are freely available for trading or transfer and are not locked or held in a contract. These tokens can be used for various purposes, such as paying for transaction fees, trading, or holding.

To learn more about how NEAR tokens are used and where they have been in the past, we invite you to explore the NEAR Token Circulating Supply Dashboard. This interface is focused on the three cornerstones of the circulating supply: liquid NEAR, staked NEAR, and locked NEAR.

The primary goal of this dashboard is to educate users about the dynamics and trends of the NEAR token circulating supply. The dashboard displays numerous charts, tables, and analyses highlighting the growth and change in each NEAR token category from August 2021 to the present.

The following methodology was used to create the NEAR Token Circulating Supply Dashboard:

    • Data was sourced from near.core.fact_transactions and near.core.fact_actions_events_function_call tables to track the staking volume over time.

    • The Circulating Supply Stats chart on the NEAR Explorer was used to manually input the circulating supply for each month.

    • The near.core.fact_blocks table was utilized to obtain the total supply of NEAR tokens.

    • The data was analyzed and processed to calculate the net staked NEAR, net locked NEAR, and net liquid NEAR.

    • The calculated data was then organized into aggregated views and separated into three separate charts to illustrate the trends of locked, staked, and liquid NEAR over time.

    • The dashboard also provides inflow/outflow information for each locked, staked, and liquid NEAR category over time.

Overall, this methodology ensured that the NEAR Token Circulating Supply Dashboard provides accurate and reliable data to users seeking to understand the dynamics and trends of NEAR token circulation.
