Tornado Cash Addresses
Introduction
Tornado. Cash is a decentralized, non-custodial system that promotes transaction privacy by separating sender and recipient addresses. Tornado.Cash uses a smart contract to accept ETH from one address and withdraw to another. These smart contracts combine all deposited assets and generate a private key verifying the deposit. The sender can use this private key to withdraw the funds at any time.
Tornado.Cash Cryptocurrency has boosted cash's desirability. Many hackers store stolen money there. In prior articles, we addressed identifying stolen monies based on transaction patterns. Today we'll look at how transaction characteristics helped detect stolen monies. link
Method
I was able to get tornado addresses by using the DIM LABEL table on the website Hint and labeling it with the phrase 'Torando Cash.'
I counted all of the transactions after using the transactions table, where I recorded my findings, and using the to address variable.
I calculated each parameter for the past month, quarter, and year using the information provided in the question as below:
- Block_timestamp::date between ‘2021-08-01’ And ‘2022-08-01’
- Block_timestamp::date between ‘2022-04-01’ And ‘2022-07-01’
- Block_timestamp::date between ‘2022-07-01’ And ‘2022-08-01’
There was a slight disparity between the sum of EZ ETH transactions and those of EZ token transactions in the table labeled "Transactions." Consequently, I decided to use a transactions table for counting TXs while also using two other columns to track volume.
Conclusion
- It seems most transactions were 1-10 ETH in the all range of times. Almost these amounts of ETH were in 57K transactions with a 31% share on all time. 25% of addresses had more than 100 ETH.
- The second group was 10-100 ETH which was in 26% of transactions in the all time. 18% of addresses had 0.01-1 ETH.
- Since the beginning of Tornado, 1-10 ETH was in 31% of transactions. The second large group was 10-100 ETH which 47K transactions transferred and 25% shares of.

Tornado Cash is in the news due to the sanctions imposed by the US government and the freezing of $75K of USDC from Circle. The addresses tied to the service have been publicly posted online. (Hint: we also have them in our crosschain address labels table as well).
\n
Using those addresses:
- Which of the Tornado Cash addresses received the most # of transactions in the last month, quarter, year
- Which addresses received the most transaction volume (worth) in the last month, quarter, year
- Over all the addresses, group the transactions into buckets by value.
- How many tx in the 0.01-0.1 ETH range went to Tornado?
- How many in the 0.1-1ETH range?
- How many in the 1-10ETH range?
- How many in the 10-100 ETH range?
- How many above 100 ETH? (split further if better)
- There have been 450 thousand transactions sent to Tornado cash addresses since Launch date. Exactly 1141 purchases were performed with Tornado Cash.
- The months of August on 2021 & 2022, saw the most action at Tornado addresses. As of then, the average daily Tx count had dropped to between 400 deals on January 2022. Their reception volume has been over 600 TXs as of late. On August 8, 2021, 1860 # tx happened, making it the busiest day of the year. On August 30rd, more than 1k transactions occurred, making it the day with the highest tx count in the previous quarter. It appears that their regular business activity did not decline over time.
- On July 27 there were approximately 1200 transactions, the most of any day last month.
- Addresses on top 2 place, are the Router and Helper addresses for that organization. It would appear that these two locations were responsible for handling their transactions. Because of this, just two addresses accounted for the most visits during the past month, quarter, and year's worth of days. In addition to that, we are able to include their proxy address beside those default addresses.
The five places that rank highest in terms of total volume as measured in US dollars
Their Router address saw the highest level of traffic over the course of the previous month, quarter, and year. In spite of the fact that it seems that this location handled their traffic better than other addresses, the address that comes in second place is the one that has received a total of 100 ETH over the course of the preceding month and quarter. In addition to that, during the preceding year, this location was recognized as having the best address. During the course of the previous month and quarter, the address for 10 ETH Tornado was the third one that was utilized. The year before, this same locale wound up in fourth place overall. Both the fourth and the fifth addresses had their most recent versions published within the last month.
In the last year, more than 70%, last quarter 67% and last month 90% of total volume are belongs to two addresses that are same in In the past Quarter and year, but in last month the previous first address dropped to second place.
