EVM - Continued Growth?
This dashboard measures the performance of Polygon , Arbitrum and Optimism as Layer 2s, in terms of User Presence, and Transaction Activity
Polygon: In 2021, the number of transacting addresses increased from 588 K in August to 2.4 M in November. It then decreased in the following months to 2.29 M in August 2022. There was a significant increase in the number of transacting addresses in Oct 2022 ( 5.8 M ), but it decreased again in the following months. In January 2023, the number of transacting addresses increased to 4.72 M.
Arbitrum: This blockchain started to have transacting addresses only in Apr 2022 (208K) and the number increased to 665 Kin November 2022. However, the number of transacting addresses decreased in the following months.
Optimism: The number of transacting addresses increased from 34 K in November 2021 to 644 Kin Dec 2022. It then decreased in the following months.
It can be concluded that the trend of transacting addresses on each blockchain is not consistent, but the overall trend seems to be increasing.
For Polygon, there has been a steady increase in the number of new users joining the chain, with the highest number of new users in the months of September 2021 and October 2021. Currently 27.9 M unique users, the largest user base of these 3 chains.
For Arbitrum, the new user count has been increasing since Apr 2022 at 108 K unique users, and raking the highest user count at on Nov `22 at 344 K unique users. The trend overall, shows increasing User Growth over time, with total user base of 2.1 M unique users .
For Optimism, there has been a slow but steady increase in the number of new users joining the chain, with a noticeable surge in the months of December 2022 and January 2023. Optimism yields the lowest total users at 1.57 M unique address.
Overall, the User Growth for all three Layer 2 chains has peaked around the end of the 2022, but has decreasing since. This is a common pattern as user growth tend to plateu after certain time, since there are only so many unique users.

For the past 90 Days, there are significantly more total transacting address on Polygon than Arbitrum and Optimism. Polygon reports 632 K unique address at its peak on Jan '23. However, Polygon begin to show declining trasacting address count towards Feb '23.
Both Arbitrum and Optimism reports relatively the same count of transacting address, but Optimism reports higher peak on 21st Dec '22 at 111 K unique user address, while Arbitrum s highest peak is at 87 K unique address. Optimism also shows declining transacting adress count approaching Feb '23, but Arbitrum reports somewhat consistent trend with no significant decline.
Overall, in terms of transacting address count per day, Arbitrum leads with strong consistent pattern towards February, while Polygon and Optimism shows signiflicant decline.
