Realms vs Snapshot

Create a dashboard that shows how Realms and Snapshot are growing and used in comparison to one another. Feel free to build off previous bounty work on these platforms. What trends do you see between governance behavior between the two chains? Does a platform seem to capture more market share of its users on their respective chain than the other? What seems to influence voting behavior on each platform? Does one platform have more proposals and voting opportunities than the other? Are whales more powerful on Realms or on Snapshot? How can each platform become more decentralized? Date Created: 31/8/2022

    INTRODUCTION

DAO: Decentralized Autonomous Organization is a community-led entity with no central authority. It’s members can vote on proposals made by the community regarding the organization actions executed by smart contracts.

    SNAPSHOT

Snapshot is a decentralized voting system on the Ethereum network. It provides flexibility on how voting power is calculated for a vote. Snapshot supports various voting types to cater to the needs of organizations.

    REALMS

Realms is a tool to create and run DAOs (Multisig, NFT community, token community) on Solana. Actions range from proposals, voting to treasury management.

    Methodology

In this dashboard we will compare Snapshot to Realms general statistics, voter behavior, voting activity, DAOs and whale activity.

The on chain data are from ethereum.core.ez_snapshot and solana.core.fact_proposal_votes tables.

Below i will present several metrics to compare realms vs snapshot that are more fair to both platforms since snapshot is older and has way more users because is on Ethereum.

On the left chart we compare 4 metrics of the platforms.

Total voters with snapshot having 1.14M and realms 4.6k.

Number of DAOs with snapshot having 6.6k and realms 453.

Number of proposals with snapshot having 54k and realms 4.6k.

Total number of votes with snapshot having 6M and realms 25k.

The above metrics are total numbers describing the impact of each platform and are heavily affected by:

1 - Ethereum is more popular and has more development activity.

2 - Snapshot is way older than Realms.

Here we see the mean number of voters / votes / proposals per DAO on each platform.

Snapshot has 917 votes, 290 voters and 8 proposals per DAO and Realms has 56 votes, 11 voters, and 10 proposals per DAO.

We also see that each voter votes 5.55 times on Realms and 5.27 times on Snapshot.

Here we see that DAOs on Snapshot are a lot bigger with x26 more voters and only x16 more votes, this difference on the scale -coupled with almost the same amount of proposals - indicates that users on Realms are more active than Snapshot.

We also see that on each proposal on average gets 5 votes on Realms and 111 on Snapshot.

From the 4 charts above we see how voters, votes, DAOs, proposals change over time.

All the numbers are way higher for Snapshot than Realms.

In the time that Realms has been active we see a high growth on all 4 metrics, even though there are some fluctuations around Spring 2022.

Neither Snapshot or Realms haven’t reached the peak they had on April and May respectively on weekly activity.

Above we see the daily new users and the cumulative users on both platforms.

There is high volatility on daily users as expected with Snapshot reaching as high as 40k users on Nov 9 2021 and Realms 182 users on Jun 20 2022.

On the cumulative chart we see a similar growth pattern on both of the platforms with Realms having slightly less growth.

On the left we see that 0.6% of total users (on all available networks) use Snapshot.

On the right we see that 0.04% of total users (on Solana) use Realms.

Even though these numbers are quite low Snapshot still has more than x10 market share.

On Snapshot we see that the top DAO is tbcc.eth with 107k users, in the second place is shellprotocol.eth with 105k users. The 10th DAO is ctcswap.eth with 21k users.

    On Realms things are different…

The Imperium of Rain is first with 1324 users, Grape DAO is second with 428 users and in the 9th place is Tulip Protocol with 108 users.

We see that the first DAOs on both platforms have a difference more than x80 on users.

The 10th DAO on Snapshot still has x16 more users than the first one on Realms.

Above we see the distribution of votes on both platforms.

On Snapshot we see 50.8% of users have voted only once and 38.3% have voted less than 10 times. On Realms 47.2% have voted once and 43.5% have voted less than 10 times.

On Snapshot only 2% have voted more than 40 times and on Realms 2.26% have voted the same amount.

    • When we see the top proposals by number of votes on both platforms see that only 3 proposals have more than 40 votes with the highest having 142 on Realms.
    • On Snapshot the highest one has 84.4k and the 20th one has 24.7k in comparison to Realms.

    WHALES

We define whales as the top 1000 accounts by wallet balance on Ethereum and Solana.

Then we look how many of them have used Snapshot or Realms.

We see that 10 of the top 1000 accounts on Solana used Realms and 0 whales on Ethereum have used Snapshot.

    CONCLUSION

    • Snapshot is larger on all metrics from Realms, Users, DAOs, Proposals.
    • Less than 1% of network users have used both of these platforms.
    • They both have large amount of new users daily.
    • Users seem more active on Realms compared to Snapshot. (Although since they are way less these mostly are early adopters who are obsessed with the tech)
    • Number of votes per User distribution is similar to both platforms with ~90% having less than 10 votes.
    • There are more opportunities on Snapshot than Realms because it has more DAOs and more Proposals.
    • There are more Whales on Realms (by my definition) than on Snapshot but they are few.
