What makes a Top Shots moment valuable?

In this dashboard I will be exploring what makes the popular NBA NFT collectables Top Shots valuable.

    Introduction

NBA Top Shot is an NFT collectable game where investors can collect, trade, and sell their favourite NBA highlights. Investors can buy packs which have randomised collectables, with some consisting of more common or rarer collectables based on the price.

I will be taking a look at the value of the different play types, which consist of different types of defensive and attacking plays seen in Basketball such as 3-pointers, stealing, blocks and more.

Let’s see how the play types relate to volume, which is the most held and what are the percentages of those on the Flow blockchain held by investors.

    Method

Using SQL & flow.core tables I collected the following data on the FlipsideCrypto IDE:

Average Price of an NBA Top Shots NFT Daily, using the function AVG and grouping by day to calculate the daily average price of an NBA Tops shots NFT.

Average Price Of NBA Top Shots NFT, using the function AVG to calculate the average price of a Top Shots NFT over time.

NBA Top Shops Play Type Number of NFTS, sum of NFT Ids to signify the number of NBA Top Shot NFTS on the Flow Blockchain.

The Number Of Holders Play Type, is the sum of a sale per address taken away from a buy per address to calculate which NFT each address is holding. A sum of all the holdings per play type is used to find the number of holders per play type.

Percent Of NFTs Help Play Type, sum of number of NFTs on the blockchain divided by the sum of Holders Play Types, using the SQL code from the two Queries above.

Total Volume In Flow And Play Type, using the sum function calculated the sum of volume over time grouped by play types.

Average Price Of Play Type, using the function AVGcalculated the average price of each play over time on the flow blockchain.

The average price of a NBA Top Shots NFT is 19.03 flow, with the collection reaching an all time high average price of 38.35 Flow on the June 7th. It is the most popular NFT collection on Flow with over 1 billion in sales, read about the most popular NFT collections on Flow here: .

The highest average price of a play type is 74.82 flow over 3* higher than the average price of the whole collection, steals sit at 18.02 flow only marginally lower than the average price of the whole collection.

For those NFT collectors who buy NBA top shots at the current time of writing any other play type is higher than the average price of an NFT in the collection.

2 point NFTs are 164% higher than the average value of an NFT in the collection,

Rim shots have the smallest percentage of holdership, despite having the largest number of NFTs in the collection, interestingly they have the highest amount of volume which could be influenced by their wider availability in the Top Shots collection.

Handles have a 9.98% holdership, making it the highest percentage of NFT held in the collection, with the 4th highest average price of 30.94 flow, handles make up only 3.11% of the total number of NFTs in the collection making them the 3rd rarest play type.

Here we have a collection of charts giving insight into the distribution of play types in the NBA top shots collection. With Dunks & Layups & 2 pointer NFTs being the rarest of the whole collection, in terms of the number of holders & number of NFTs.

Rim shots have the highest level of volume, with 3 million in volume, with 3-pointers seeing 1.7 million Flow worth of volume the two play types with the most volume. Dunk/Layup has 13k worth of volume in sales, and 2 pointers have only 453 flow worth of sales. However, despite the low volume, these are the two plays with the highest average sale price. It’s important to remember that with low volume the average price may not match the market value of an NFT, as the buys and sales could come on days where the overall market value of the whole NFT collection was higher or lower than the average price, more volume in terms of the number of sales generally means a more accurate average price as there is more data available to analyse. There are 174 sales for Dunk/Layup and 9 Sales for 2 Pointer, however, they are also both the rarest NFTs in the collection.

    Closing Thoughts

NBA Top Shots have attracted a lot of volume, and offer investors a variety of play types to invest in, with the majority of play types excluding Steals being higher than the average sale price of a NFT from the collection.

From the data in this Dashboard I see Handles as a safe investment for someone looking to invest in valuable NFTs in the collection higher than the average sale price, they have a high percentage of holders relative to the number of NFTs and they are a rarer play type out of the collection. Importantly what we see from the dashboard, is the role factoring in different data points could have before making an investment decision as while Rim shots have the highest volume they have the lowest holdership out of all the play types. For those only interested in the average price, we get insight into the high average price of Dunk Layup and 2 Pointer NFTs with both being both over 2 times more valuable than the average sale price.
