What is Aave?
The Aave protocol is a decentralized, non-custodial liquidity market protocol that allows users to participate as suppliers or borrowers. Suppliers provide liquidity to the market and earn a passive income, while borrowers can borrow funds in either an overcollateralized or undercollateralized fashion. Aave was originally founded by Stani Kulechov, who became interested in Ethereum and its potential to disrupt traditional finance while studying law at the University of Helsinki. Initially, he released a decentralized application called ETHLend, which raised funds through an initial coin offering (ICO) for its LEND token. ETHLend focused on facilitating loan requests and offers within a community-based framework. In 2020, ETHLend transformed its product and rebranded itself as Aave. The term "Aave" translates to "ghost" in Finnish and has become the protocol's mascot. The ghost icon associated with Aave is often seen in the Twitter bios of individuals who work on the protocol.
