How centralized or decentralized is NEAR, really?

    What Is Near Protocol?

Near Protocol is a layer 1 blockchain network. It provides a platform on which developers can build decentralized applications (dapps). The most successful layer 1 blockchain is Ethereum, so protocols like Near are seen as challengers. The key yardsticks for layer 1 networks are transaction costs, speed and the ability to maintain those features as transaction volumes grow.

These factors are the focus for layer 1s like Near to improve upon Ethereum, which has encountered issues with costs and speed over the last few years.

Near Protocol is faster and cheaper than Ethereum. More importantly, it promises to be faster than some of the other largest challengers.

When fully implemented, Near is expected to be able to process up to around 100,000 transactions per second (TPS). Ethereum’s largest rival, Solana, averages less than 3,000 transactions per second, according to its own blockchain explorer. Ethereum averages double-digit transactions per second. Bitcoin does less than 10.

    What is Solana?

Solana is a public, open-source blockchain that supports smart contracts, including non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and a variety of decentralized applications (dApps). Native to Solana’s blockchain is the SOL token which provides network security through staking as well as a means of transferring value.

Solana was created in 2017 by Anatoly Yakovenko alongside current Solana board member and Chief Operations Officer Raj Gokal. Yakovenko, now Solana Lab’s CEO, came from a background in system design and wanted to apply his knowledge toward a new blockchain paradigm that enabled faster processing speeds.

Solana is a proof-of-stake cryptocurrency with smart contract capabilities including DeFi dApps and NFTs.

Solana boasts The boom in the DeFi and NFT spaces have pushed fees on Ethereum extremely high causing crypto users to seek other options like Solana. Solana has been at the center of controversy in the crypto industry as skeptics claim its transaction speed are only possible because the chain has sacrificed decentralization.

The founders aimed to create a brand new blockchain that could scale to global adoption. At the time, blockchain transaction speeds were limited to around 15 per second, a throughput that paled in comparison to Visa and Mastercard’s ability to process roughly 65,000 transactions per second. Yakovenko and Gokal sought to make a new blockchain that could meet demand at a global scale.

Solana now boasts a theoretical peak capacity of 65,000 transactions per second and has become one of the most highly used blockchains today due to its speed and cheap transaction costs.

Like almost any blockchain system today, Solana is still very new and not without controversy.

    What is Osmosis?

Osmosis is Layer-1, Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain built using the Cosmos SDK that has optimized its design to be a sandbox for automated market makers (AMMs). The chain enables developers to design and deploy customized AMMs by using its various modules and leveraging Osmosis' on-chain governance system. Osmosis' native token, OSMO, grants holders the right to vote on proposed network changes and earn rewards for helping secure the network. Its first application, also called Osmosis, is an AMM that features ATOM and OSMO as its initial base trading pairs.

The introduction of automated market makers (AMMs) ushered in a new era of crypto-economic utility and bonding curve applications. AMMs have become an essential element of DeFi infrastructure, and every new ecosystem must have an exchange with liquidity pools to support basic tokens swaps and the creation of supplementary financial products.

Osmosis is an AMM protocol created using the Cosmos SDK. The project was announced in October 2020 and launched on Jun. 19th, 2021. Its core developers include Sunny Aggarwal, Josh Lee, and Dev Ojha. Osmosis' vision is that rather than aiming for a one-size-fits-all strategy for AMMs and their liquidity pools, it could provide a sandbox for AMM development. The protocol enables developers to iterate on new, customized AMM designs by using the existing liquidity pools and modules already running on the network. It also features an on-chain governance system that allows each AMM pool's stakeholders (i.e. liquidity providers) to control and direct their pools.

Osmosis was the first Cosmos-based chain to popularize IBC transfers. IBC transfers had been available for several months before but there was little actual demand from the connected chains; therefore, the volume of IBC transfers was extremely low. Being the first AMM on Cosmos, Osmosis offered the ability to trade and earn rewards through liquidity provision.

    About NEAR’s Road to Decentralization

Since its inception, NEAR Foundation has been committed to not only helping build a fast, secure and scalable blockchain, but to facilitate the decentralization of network to the community.

Not only are concrete steps being taken to fast-track the decentralization of NEAR’s underlying technology and infrastructure, but massive contributions are being made towards galvanizing the developer community, ensuring that power lies with the community upon which NEAR thrives.

In this series, NEAR Foundation explores decentralization from different perspectives.

The NEAR community’s big-picture vision has always been straightforward — onboard billions of people into Web3. In this new iteration of the Internet, blockchain platforms and apps will be decentralized, open-source, transparent, and humane.

This Open Web will be full of utility, encouraging maximum participation from developers and end-users.

Web3 won’t be dependent on central authorities to access services like social media, games, Metaverse experiences, and more. Decentralization, coupled with permissionless systems (i.e, open or public smart contracts), will give people a greater sense of ownership, control, and protection over their data in alignment with the financial outcomes of decentralized apps (dapps). With this regulatory foundation—or governance, as it is referred to in crypto—humanity can evolve into a new era of borderless economic opportunity for all.

A future built on creativity, community, and inclusivity requires a core based on interoperability between blockchains. There is no single blockchain that will own Web3. NEAR and other blockchain communities understand that the future is multi-chain, and bridges and decentralization are critical to getting there…
