What makes a Top Shots moment valuable? (Part II)
(Flow - 10/12/2022)
Introduction:
NBA Top Shot is an NFT marketplace where sports fans can buy, sell and trade basketball video clips. Launched in 2020, NBA Top Shot is a partnership between the NBA and Dapper Labs, the creators of CryptoKitties.
This dashboard will investigate into this marketplace to create an analysis on NBA Top Shots moments and attempt to uncover any correlations between a specific category and sales volume.
Methodology:
To do this analysis I used
- Flipside Crypto database
flow.core.dim_topshot_metadata
tableflow.core.fact_nft_sales
tableflow.core.fact_prices
table

- Most play_type held on topshot is Rim (more than 50% of all holders hold it)
- Rim is followed by 3Pointer, Assist and Block.
Comparing this analysis with my “Part I top shot moments analysis” showed some changes in play_types including:
-
Rim right now has a larger share of all play_types in comparison to last analysis.
-
Handles play_type climbs to fifth grade (from sixth)
-
The upward trend has a gentler slope now.
\
On NBA Top Shot:
- LeBron James makes the most trading volume among players (6.86% of all trades); Next one is Luka Doncic.
- Los Angles Laker makes the most trading volume among teams.
- Most traded NFTs are belong to 2020-2021 season.
- Top three most popular play categories are Dunk, 3Pointer and Layup (about 65% of all).
- Super players, super teams and super collectibles have 32.2%, 46.2% and 44.8% of all sales volume.
My definition:
Super players are players having more than 1% of total sale on TopShot
Super collectibles are collectibles having more than 50% of all sales together.
Super teams are top ten teams having more than 8m$ total sale on TopShot
- The top-selling TopShot was on February 22, 2021 ($8.4 million).
- April 15, 2022 is the second golden day for TopShots.
Analysis of the daily sales table based on play_types shows:
- Rim's share of all sales increased from 20 percent (on average) to 50 percent (on average) in about 5 months (2021 Oct to March).
- Since September 25, 2022, Rim's share of daily sales has decreased from about 50% to 25%. On the other hand, there are some days with high sales for Dunk_layup (Exp: 37% in Oct 11) and for Mid_range (Exp: 51% in Oct 9) and 3_points (Exp: 38% in Oct 10).
What an unpredictable October!
- In the last month, most daily traded “season” changed from 2019_20 (11 to 18 Sep) to 1986_87 (21 to 30 Sep) to an irregular combination of 2019_20, 2021_22 and 1986_86.
- In the last month, almost all days have Los Angeles as most traded team but some less seen teams like Memphis Grizzlies showed off on last days.
- Less seen.
- In the last month, the first third was the kingdom of Base Set as most traded collectible while second third was for Run It Back; Last 5 days had no regular pattern and we saw les seen names again.
- Increase or decrease in monthly sales based on super or normal players are almost aligned with each other (other metrics are same)
Comparing last 30 days with all time on Top Shot we understand:
- Tendency to buy super players NFT ==decreased== from 32 to 18 percent.
- Tendency to buy super collectibles NFT ==decreased== from 46.2 to 33.1 percent.
- Tendency to buy super teams NFT ==decreased== from 44.8 to 39.1 percent.
(Most change is for Players)
- There is no specific pattern between “super” and “normal” in daily timeframe.
