Introduction
The Interchain Nameservice is a DApp providing meaningful names to the rather unfriendly addresses found on blockchain in the Cosmos Universe. It aims to provide an experience optimized for the multi-chain environment it is built-in.
The initial version of ICNS has been deployed to Osmosis in December 2022 with the plan to add outposts to more Cosmos chains in the coming months. Even now just a short while after launch it has already been integrated into several popular Cosmos tools & websites like Keplr & Mintscan.
Something previously not seen in blockchain Name-Services is the name claim mechanism introduced by ICNS. Instead of allowing users to freely register names, they are required to own the twitter handle of the name they want to register.
The proposal to deploy ICNS has been approved by the overwhelming majority of $OSMO stakers which you can consider suprising given the existence of a competitor creating a very similar service (Stargaze Names)
