FLOW Usage During the NBA Playoffs

    • Q19. Analyze the NBA Conference Finals (May 17th- May 29th) and determine whether it had an impact on NBA Top Shot's volume.

      \

    • Did the Warriors, Celtics, Mavericks, or Heat see higher sales volume?

    Introduction

    • Flow Blockchain's strongest project activity is NBA Top Shot, a NFT’s Collection of the iconic moments from the NBA.
    • The Project was so successful that Dapper Labs Inc., the creators of Flow, made another partnership with the NFL, bringing a new NFT Collection.
    • Both projects are the top 1 (NBA) and top 2 (NFL) in the Flowverse.

    Methodology

    Using Flipside Data Banks table:

    • flow.core.dim_topshot_metadata, to get information about NBA Top Shot NFTs.
    • flow.core.fact_nft_sales, to get information about NFTs Sales.

    Analysis

    • The NFTs Collections from the conference finals were released from June 3, onwards. With a total of over 80k distinct NFTs from the 4 teams playing in the event.

First is the analysis of NFT's Sales during the Conference Finals, then comes the analysis of the sales made by the NFT collection from the Conference Finals.

    • This graphic and the following only use the NFTs from the Conference Finals Collection. I didn’t include the NFTs from the finals Golden State Warriors vs Boston Celtics.
    • This graphic only takes successful transactions, and from the 4 teams playing in the conference finals.
    • The higher activity was at the release of these NFTs (Jun 3 - Jun 4), with sales above the 100k DUC, and over 3k of successful transactions made on both days, meaning that a lot of “rare-unique” NFTs were sold these days, after that the transactions made descend below the 1k and also the DUC spent starts going downtrend, meaning that the sales are with cheaper “common-uncommon” NFTs.

    • Most of the NFTs from NBA Top Shots use the Dapper Utility Coin as their currency. This graph only includes the NFTs, which use DUC as their currency.
    • The first important spike starts from May 18 to May 19, dates where the first matches of the conference finals are played.
    • After that, the sales volume was steady and dropped in the final match of the Eastern Conference finals.
    • The conference finals didn’t influence the number of transactions or the sales volume of the NBA Top Shot NFTs aside from the case mentioned before.
    • There are some NBA Top Shots NFTs which use flow as their currency.
    • There is more activity on the days of the Conference final, with a spike on May 21, although there isn’t an important match that day.
    • Again, the spike in activity doesn’t correlate with an important event. On May 22, Miami Heat were winning 2-1 and Golden State Warriors finished 3-0. On May 26, Golden State Warriors won their final, making the most transactions and sales volume on that day, But in the case of Boston Celtics they won in May 29 and still they make the less transactions on that day.
    • First of all, the Null implicates that there is no team related to the NFT. Also, there is an important difference between these graphs and the past graphs; they don’t correlate well.
    • Miami Heat transactions were fewer before, and now they are more than some of the others. The sales volume also has problems. I guess some data is missing when I filter for a specific team, although in both graphs I use only the DUC currency and successful transactions only.
    • With that aside, it is pretty obvious that during the Conference Finals, the 4 teams participating have the most sales and transactions in comparison with the other teams NFTs.
    • Golden State Warriors were the winners after playing against the other Conference finals winner (Boston Celtic). This explains why GSW NFTs are selling more.
    • Boston Celtic NFTs are the second most transacted but the sales volume is 3rd place.
    • Golden State Warriors have the most sales volume in both NFT’s Conference Finals collection, and during the conference finals.

    Summary

    • There is some “Hype” in the flowverse at the start of the NBA conference Finals, but during the event there isn’t a relevant spike in NBA Top Shot NFTs sold.
    • There was a strong activity in transactions and sales volume when the NBA Conference Finals NFT Collection was released on June 3.
    • Golden State Warriors NFTs have the higher sales volume in both “events”:
      • NFTs of Golden State Warriors team, sold during the Conference Finals.
      • NFTs of Golden State Warriors team in the Conference Finals Collection, after release.
    • This is expected considering that Golden State Warriors won this year's NBA Championship (4-2), with an excellent performance during the Conference Finals (4-1).
