Polygon Block Performance

ft. Solana, Optimism, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche and Flow

    Question

    • What is the average time between blocks on Polygon?
    • What was the maximum and minimum recorded time between two blocks? How many transactions are done in a block on average? How do these numbers compare to L1 such as Flow or Solana, or other L2 such as Arbitrum or Optimism?

    Introduction

    • Polygon is a second layer of the Ethereum network created in order to make easier the blockchain network, allowing speedy transactions and work as a low-cost ecosystem. Matic is the cryptocurrency of Polygon, which enables governance, pays fees and can be staked.
    • In this dashboard the Polygon blockchain is going to be compared with other layer 1 and layer 2 blockchains such as Solana, Optimism, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Flow and Ethereum, with the main goal to have a better view of Polygon as a blockchain.

    Time Analysis

    • Polygon Average time between blocks is 2.24 seconds, the difference between Polygon and Solana (The faster average time) is only 1.57 seconds, So isn’t really bad as ethereum which is the most slower with 19 seconds aprox, But:

      \

Polygon times are really stable with the maximum time between 2 blocks at 25 seconds, the faster of all the present blockchains.

      \

    • Only Optimism is the other Blockchain which maximum time is under the Minute, the rest blockchains maximum time goes over the 10k seconds for Flow and Solana, over the 20k seconds for Arbitrum, over the 100k seconds for Avalanche and Ethereum with the slower maximum time of over 1M seconds.

    Comparison between blockchains

Although Polygon average time, minimum time and median time are not the fasters, still has faster times overall, the other blockchain with faster times is Optimism.

Solana, Flow and Arbitrum have all the times between 0-1.5 seconds except their maximum, after that comes Avalanche with times between the 0-2 seconds except their maximum which is the second place, and finally Ethereum as the slower.

    Summary

    • Polygon minimum and median time between blocks are 2 seconds, 2.24 seconds as the average time and the maximum time 25 seconds, which makes Polygon the faster in maximum time, and with a difference of the best time in average of 1.57 seconds only, with Optimism are the 2 best in times between block.
    • Polygon block number is the smaller between the presents blockchain, but thanks to the number of transactions is 3rd place also in transactions per block.
    • Overall Polygon is a really good blockchain, with faster times and a decent amount of transactions.

Polygon total blocks is the smaller between the presents blockchains, but is 3rd place in total number of transactions, which makes Polygon 3rd place in average transactions made per block.

Solana is the top 1 in number of blocks, transactions and average transactions made per block and Ethereum the second place.

Although Flow is 3rd place in number of blocks, is 4th place in number of transactions and average per block.

Optimism is 4th place in number of blocks, 6th place in number of transactions and last in average per block.

Arbitrum is 5th place in number of blocks, last place in number of transactions and 6th in average per block.

Avalance is 6th place in number of blocks, 5th place in number of transactions and in average per block.
