Squid vs Hop vs Thorchain
Welcome to the Squid Competitive Analysis Dashboard, Here I'll compare the Squid Protocol against two protocols in three different areas, Transaction, User, and Volume Activity.
The goal of this dashboard isn't to showcase separate activities but instead compare on these areas all three protocols at the same time.
I decided to track data since March 2023, because that is when the Squid protocol activity started to grow up significantly and increased its reach.
Thorchain
THORChain is a settlement layer that facilitates swaps between 8 chains: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Binance Chain, Avalanche, Cosmos Hub, Dogecoin, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash. THORChain is secured by its native token, RUNE, which deterministically accrues value as more assets are deposited into the network. Anyone can use THORChain to swap native assets between any supported chains or deposit their assets to earn yield from swaps. (Thorchain Website)
Hop
Hop is a scalable rollup-to-rollup general token bridge. It allows users to send tokens from one rollup or sidechain to another almost immediately without having to wait for the networks challenge period. It works by involving market makers (referred to as Bonder) who front the liquidity at the destination chain in exchange for a small fee. This credit is extended by the Bonder in form of hTokens which are then swapped for their native token counterpart in an AMM. The end result allows users to seamlessly transfer tokens from one network to the next.(Hop Faqs)
Squid
Squid allows any token to be swapped between blockchains, and unlocks access to apps across chains in a single click. Use Squid to build seamless user experiences that tap into cross-chain liquidity and scale to reach anyone with a crypto wallet, no matter what chain they’re on. (Squid Website)

All of these protocols help users to move assets across different Blockchains, however, each one has its own limitations and blockchain reach.
- Squid supported Blockchains are Ethereum, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Polygon, Binance, Fantom, Moonbeam, Celo, Kava, and Filecoin However soon it will have support for the rest of IBC like Osmosis, Terra, Kujira, and many more.
- THORChain moves assets between Bitcoin, Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, Cosmos Hub, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Avalanche Blockchains.
- Hop Protocol only moves assets between Ethereum Virtual Machines (EVM), so you can only move between the Ethereum Layer-1 and some of their Layer-2 (Polygon, Gnosis, Optimism, and Arbitrum).
