Observation

A total of 3.37 Billion Matic tokens have been staked into 100 different validators. This is almost a third of the total supply. The USD equivalent of the staked matic is 2.547 Billion USD. There appears to be a sharp increase in the amount staked leading upto the ethereum merge on September 15, 2022

We see that in the last few months ( from July 2022), a total of 22.76 Million matic tokens were staked while 1.122 Million were unstaked., thus effectively leaving 21.623 Million matic in the staked pool.

The staking ration is calculated as the amount of tokens staked with respect to the circulating supply. Circulating supply exludes the staked amount, vesting contract balance, matic foundation and marketing and ecosystem funds. Funds which are not available to the public. We see that though the staking ratio has spikes in the last few months, it hovers around 0.45.

Of the 10 Billion Matic token currently in supply, 3.37 Billion token are locked up for staking. However, ==only 2.7 % of these are through liquidity staking==. Additionally, Lido finance and Stader labs make up the other 2.6%, leaving a partly 0.1% to claystack and ankr.

How did i do it ? (Methodology)

To identify the stakes and the unstake activity, we look at the PoS contract 0x5e3ef299fddf15eaa0432e6e66473ace8c13d908. Using the table ethereum.core.fact_token_transfers, we can identify stakes and unstakes based on the direction of matic flow.

Staking ratio is calculated as the amount of MATIC staked with respect to the amount of MATIC currently in circulation. The amount of MATIC is currently, the entire MATIC cap excluding the staked amount, vesting contract balance, matic foundation and marketing and ecosystem funds.
