NEAR City Layout

How centralized or decentralized is NEAR, really? Choose at least two distinct measures of decentralization that can be explored with on-chain data; clearly define those metrics; and outline how NEAR performs based on those metrics. In your view, is NEAR becoming more centralized or decentralized over time?

    Introduction

NEAR is the native token of the NEAR Protocol, a highly scalable blockchain network that provides a developer-friendly, decentralized application platform. NEAR tokens are used to pay network fees and can be staked to enhance network security.

    Aim of present article

In this article, we are going to study the state of NEAR blockchain in terms of decentralization. We have considered various parameters such as: number of stakers, total staked tokens, validators, new users, pools and other useful parameters.

    1- NEAR staking status

    Key insights

Above, four categories of charts are drawn in relation to NEAR staking status.

    • In the first chart, you can see the number of stakes and unstakes per month. As can be seen, the amount of stakes in September was relatively low, but in October, it increased sharply, so that the most stakes in recent months happened in October. The amount of unstakes reached its highest level in the same month.
    • In recent months, the amount of stakes has increased, but this trend does not apply to unstakes.
    • In the second group of charts, you can see the number of people who did stake and unstake transactions in each month, the number of users was high in October, but it decreased significantly in the following months.
    • The number of unstakers was the highest in November.
    • The trend of stakers and unstakers in recent months is the same as the previous chart.
    • The next two charts show the amount of stakes, in November the average amount of stakes increased.
    • The highest number of stakes is in August and the highest number of stakes is in December.
    • But in general, according to the charts, stakes are significantly more than unstakes.

    Key insights

    • The number of new stakers was high in October and November, but after that it decreased a lot and reached its minimum in recent months.
    • The total number of stakers has increased over time, but the slope of the chart has decreased.
    • Daily NEAR validators did not increase or decrease significantly until the end of December. After that, until the middle of January, its trend increased, but at the end of January, a sharp increase occurred, but after that, its value remains almost constant.
    • Active NEAR pools per months decreased in January and increased again in October.
