Polygon Block Performance

What is the average time between blocks on Polygon? What was the maximum and minimum recorded time between two blocks? How many transactions are done in a block on average? How do these numbers compare to L1 such as Flow or Solana, or other L2 such as Arbitrum or Optimism?

    Introduction

In this dashboard we’ll talk about different metrics of block performance on polygon and compare it with other blockchains.

    Methodology

    1. I compared the information gathered with the following 5 blockchains:

      1. Polygon
      2. Solana
      3. Flow
      4. Arbitrum
      5. Optimism
    2. All the information to make this dashboard was gathered from the transactions table for every respective blockchain

    3. All the time data used is expressed in seconds.

Q1.- What is the average time between blocks on Polygon?

    • The average time between blocks on Polygon is 2.27 seconds.

    Observations

    1. We can see in the next graph the comparison with other blockchains.
    2. Using those numbers we can get to the conclusion that Polygon is the blockchain with the most delay in terms of time between blocks and Solana is the one with the less delay.

Q2.- What was the maximum and minimum recorded time between two blocks?

    • The maximum time recorded between 2 blocks on Polygon is 27 seconds, and the minimum is 2 seconds.

    Observations

    1. The next graph shows the comparison of the maximum and minimum recorded time between two blocks for each blockchain.

    2. If we convert the max time to hours for Arbitrum, Flow and Solana, as they are the ones with the most time recorded between 2 blocks, we get to the next numbers:

      1. Arbitrum: 9.92 hours
      2. Solana : 4.45 hours
      3. Flow: 3.1 hours

These numbers are totally off when compared to Polygon and Optimism. Maybe, the reason of those numbers are because an error on the blockchains that caused a transactions stop for a determinated period of time.

Q3.- How many transactions are done in a block on average?

    • The average transactions made by block on Polygon are 75.83 transactions.

    Observations

    1. The next graph shows the comparison of average transactions made by block for each blockchain.
    2. We can see that solana is the only blockchain that have more transactions per block compared to Polygon.
    3. Optimism have a 1:1 relation on transactions and blocks according to the graph.

    Conclusion

I think Polygon have a solid block performance compared to the other ones, maybe it can be the slowest in terms of average time between blocks but is the most stable in terms of maximum and minumum recorded time between blocks.
