NBA Top Shot is a blockchain-based digital collectible platform that allows users to purchase, trade, and own officially licensed NBA highlights in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Each highlight is a unique digital item that can be bought, sold, and owned just like a physical collectible. These highlights are called "moments" and they are represented by a digital image or video of an iconic play from a NBA game, that can include information such as the players involved, the date and location of the game, and other details.
Users can purchase these digital collectibles through packs, which are similar to trading card packs. Users can also trade their digital collectibles on a marketplace. The platform has a built-in type system that enables clients to validate their queries, and servers to validate their responses, which makes it more predictable and efficient.
The platform was launched in October 2020 by Dapper Labs, the same company that created CryptoKitties. It quickly gained popularity among NBA fans and collectors and became one of the most successful NFT projects to date. As of January 2021, the platform has seen a growth in terms of sales and users, with some top shots selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
NBA Top Shot allows users to buy, sell, and collect NBA NFTs that showcase influential “Moments” minted on the FLOW blockchain. Some Moments are rarer than others, but the rarest versions are worth the most.
Moments are minted in “Packs,” much like you’d expect from physical trading cards. Packs are minted in Sets as part of a Series. The timeline of each Series runs concurrently with the NBA season. As a result, each week or so, users can purchase new digital packs of NFT Moments that showcase the season’s most significant plays. Although pack drops are driven by the current season’s events, legacy fans needn’t worry about missing out on owning their favorite plays from the past. There is ample opportunity to collect retroactive Moments.
