[Osmosis] - Wallet Balances & Ecosystem Growth
Bouny Question
With the launch of Flipside's new Balances table, let's take a look at how the story of Osmosis can be told through wallet balances. Provide insights into following metrics:
- How has the ratio of liquid to staked OSMO changed overtime?
- Are the top 100 OSMO holders the same now as they were at the start of the year?
- What is the current average OSMO per wallet? How has that value changed over time? Plot average OSMO/wallet against user growth.
- Do wallets normally hold a majority of OSMO, or another token? How has this changed over time?
What is a crypto wallet?
Crypto wallets keep your private keys – the passwords that give you access to your cryptocurrencies – safe and accessible, allowing you to send and receive cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. They come in many forms, from hardware wallets like Ledger (which looks like a USB stick) to mobile apps like Coinbase Wallet, which makes using crypto as easy as shopping with a credit card online. What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is Layer-1, Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain built using the Cosmos SDK that has optimized its design to be a sandbox for automated market makers (AMMs). The chain enables developers to design and deploy customized AMMs by using its various modules and leveraging Osmosis' on-chain governance system. Osmosis' native token, OSMO, grants holders the right to vote on proposed network changes and earn rewards for helping secure the network. Its first application, also called Osmosis, is an AMM that features ATOM and OSMO as its initial base trading pairs.
Methodology
In this dashboard, this reference is used as a source of inspiration.
-
In the ==first== step, the balance status and balance type of the wallets for the OSMO token were checked.
-
In the ==second== step, the desired ratios were obtained and the daily status of one of these ratios (liquid to staked) was obtained.
-
In the ==third== step, the top 100 holders on the first day of 2022 and the current date were obtained.
-
In the ==fourth== step, it was checked who were the joint holders between these two dates and how were their changes between these two times?
-
In the ==fifth== step, the average OSMOs held per wallet in the current date were obtained.
-
In the ==sixth== step, the average OSMOs held per wallet over time was obtained and compared with the daily growth rate of users.
-
In the ==seventh== step, the top tokens of the wallets were checked in terms of the number of tokens, the number of holders, and the average number of tokens per holder.
- In the ==eighth== step, all findings and conclusions were mentioned in a final section.
Summary of findings and conclusions
-
The "Liquid" type accounts for the largest volume of OSMOs available in wallets. The ratio of "Liquid" OSMOs to "Staked" OSMOs is 2.84 times.
\
-
The number of "Liquid" OSMO holders is about 1.68 times that of "Staked" OSMO holders.
\
-
The percentage ratio of "Liqiud to Staked" has gone through a very ups and downs trend over time. From late 2021 to mid-March 2022, downward, from March to May upward, from May to October downward (except July) and strongly upward trend in October. Clearly, this rapid growth in this ratio can be attributed to a decrease of about 24% in the volume of "Staked" OSMOs.
\
-
The highest percentage ratio of "Liqiud to Staked" was reached in this month of October. Before reaching 284% on October 24, in May 2022, this ratio had conquered the peak of 230%.
\
-
In July, there was a clear increase in both the volume of "Liquid" OSMOs and the volume of "Staked" OSMOs.
\
-
Among the top 100 holders of OSMO, there are 40 common holders on the first day of 2022 and the current date. Out of these 40, 8 holders have added to their balance on the first day of the year, 5 holders have a balance exactly equal to the first day of the year, and the other 27 holders are still holding a smaller amount of OSMO than what they held on the first day of the year.
\
-
The largest change in the balance can be attributed to the following address, which, despite the removal of 142.88m OSMO, is still the largest holder of this token: ==osmo1fl48vsnmsdzcv85q5d2q4z5ajdha8yu3aq6l09==
\
-
Comparing the rank of these 40 common holders on the first day of the year and the current date, it can be seen that most of these holders have a higher rank on the current date than their rank on the first day of the year. This is exactly related to the negative balance changes of 27 holders.

-
The average OSMOs held per wallet is currently 871 OSMOs. This number is far from the peak days of this parameter. In September 2021, this parameter showed numbers above 3.1k OSMO per wallet. (72% reduction of this parameter comparing September 2021 and today)
\
-
In the chart comparing the average OSMOs held per wallet and user growth, there is an interesting correlation. Since the beginning of 2022, when user growth has become much faster, the average OSMOs per wallet has also started a downward trend. This is of course a logical result, because the growth rate of the number of OSMO tokens has not been the same as the growth rate of users, the increase in the number of users has reduced this ratio (the average amount of OSMO in each wallet).
\
-
At present, the most held token is the LUNC token. The impact of the May 2022 disaster for LUNA Classic (or LUNC for short) can be clearly and quite clearly seen here, its drastic price drop and the monstrous abundance of LUNA tokens to prevent that catastrophe.
\
-
Among the top 10 tokens (in terms of the number of tokens) on both dates, you can see USTC and OSMO, HUAHUA tokens.
\
-
In terms of number of holders, OSMO is number one both on the first day of the year and on the current date. The number of holders of this token in the current date compared to the first day of the year is 6.37.
\
-
In terms of the average number of tokens to the number of holders, the OSMO token is ranked 9th on the first day of the year and 41st at the current date among other tokens. This shows that with the passage of time and the expansion of the network, users and currencies, OSMO has lost its position more and more every day. Of course, it is clear that the value of tokens plays one of the key roles in this parameter, but the price cannot be a logical justification for this drop of 32 rank.
