Layer 2 Blocks

How many layer2 StarkNet blocks have been accepted on Ethereum (L1) chain so far? How much fees have been paid(generated) to Ethereum network? Has StarkNet contributed to saving in transaction fees for its users?

    Introduction

    What is StarkNet?

StarkNet is a permissionless decentralized Validity-Rollup (also known as a “ZK-Rollup”). It operates as an L2 network over Ethereum, enabling any dApp to achieve unlimited scale for its computation – without compromising Ethereum’s composability and security, thanks to StarkNet’s reliance on the safest and most scalable cryptographic proof system – STARK.

What is a layer 2 blockchain?

Layer 2 refers to a secondary framework or protocol that is built on top of an existing blockchain system. The main goal of these protocols is to solve the transaction speed and scaling difficulties that are being faced by the major cryptocurrency networks.

    Methodology

We are looking to see the number of Starknet Blocks that have been acepted into ethereun. To figure this out we will look at emanating from the StarkNet operator to StarkNet core contract. This is how starkNet blocks are registered on ethereum blockchain.

    Observations

Most days 12 StarkNet blocks have been accepted each day; some days there have been as little as 5 blocks and some days have over 30 blocks. Overall there have been nearly 3000 StarkNet blocks accepted on Ethereum (L1). Starting mid may there has been a lot more than12 blocks many days.

    Conclusion

Between December 2021 and May 2022 there has been less than 1 ETH of fees spent on StarkNet blocks each day. Since then there were many days with over 20 ETH of gas fees. In total startnet users paid 1718 ETH in gas fees since december 2021. Most days 12 StarkNet blocks have been accepted each day; some days there have been as little as 5 blocks and some days have over 30 blocks. Overall there have been nearly 3000 StarkNet blocks accepted on Ethereum (L1).
