The State of Staking

    What is NEAR?

Near Protocol is a layer 1 blockchain network. It provides a platform on which developers can build decentralized applications (dapps). The most successful layer 1 blockchain is Ethereum, so protocols like Near are seen as challengers.

    What is the Nakamoto coefficient?

The Nakamoto coefficient is a way to quantify the decentralization of a blockchain or other decentralized system. It's the number of entities you need to compromise at least one essential subsystem. in this dashboard it will be defined as 33% of the stake.

    What is a stake pool?

A stake pool is a reliable server node that focuses on the maintenance and holds the combined stake of various stakeholders in a single entity. Stake pools are responsible for processing transactions and producing new blocks and are at the core of Ouroboros, the Cardano proof-of-stake protocol.

    Methodology

In this dashboard, we are looking to see the decentralization of the NEAR chain. To measure decentralization we will look at the number of stake pools and the Nakamoto coefficient of the blockchain. Adtitionally we are looking to see the activty on the chain by wallet size. The data for this dashboard will come from the near.core tables of Flipsideā€™s database.

    Observations

    • Since September the active stake pools on Near have gone from 60 to 110
    • The average size of NEAR stake pools have been declined over time
    • The median Near stake pool has 3.2 Million Near in it
    • The top 8 Stake Pools make up around 33% of the total stake

    Observations

    • Users holding between 10 and 100 NEAR tokens are the most active group of users in terms of users and transaction volume
    • Users holding between 10 and 100 NEAR make about 66% of all NEAR transactions and 33% of transaction volume
    • In terms of volume users holding over 1 million NEAR make up 3% of the transfers, but 31.5% of the transfer volume on the chain
    • Wallets with over 1 million near make up around 40% of all transactions on the chain
