Osmosis Governance Participation

Create a dashboard that maps community participation in governance. On average, how long does it take for a new wallet to become active in Osmosis governance? Do wallets that are active in governance vote on every proposal? Or do they only vote on select proposals?

    Introduction

    • What is Osmosis? Osmosis was built on top of another blockchain the Cosmos and is an automatic market maker. It makes use of IBC, which is inter blockchain communication and helps to facilitate cross-chain transactions. What this means is that Osmosis is a DEX, decentralized exchange that is designed specifically for Cosmos, with the hope to spread to other blockchains in the future.

    • What is Governance? Governance tokens are the cryptocurrencies that also give you voting power on different blockchains. This moves the power away from an individual or centralized system and gives those who are a part of the environment or community a say in the direction the blockchain goes and how it develops. This brings power to those who are not only users, but owners, much like employees of a company who own stock, so they would want what is best for the company.

    Methodology

    • Find the average length for a wallets age before they participate

    • Analyze how voting volume has changed over time

    • Find how often the average wallet votes

    • Find how many voters vote often (x > 100)

    Conclusion

    • The average user votes on 1/20 proposals

    • There are 3640 users who have voted over 100 times

    • The number of Proposals at once and the number of votes per proposal have drastically increased over time

    • The average wallets waits 52~53 days before participating in governance

To find this number I found the date that the wallet was created and the first time that they had voted. By finding the difference in days between all of the wallets I was able to distinguish that the average wallet takes between 52 and 53 days to begin participating in governance.

Voting Over Time and By Proposal

As you can see by this graph the amount of participation in voting has grown drastically over time. Not only has the amount of votes per proposal grown, but the number of proposals at once has also increased. This would indicate a large increase in the amount of users and developers who are using Cosmos and Osmosis.

What you can also see is that the number of votes per proposal has been dropping. This could indicate that as the market has been doing poor people are less interested in what is going on on Osmosis. Although the trend is still upwards from where it began it has dropped since its peak

Average Votes and Number of High Voters

The first number will give you an indication of how many people are actually consistently voting. Very few are actually going to be participating in governance consistently, which is why the average is that every person will vote 1/20 proposals.

The below number will also show that there are a decent amount of consistent voters. There have been around 260 proposals, which is quite a significant amount. 3640 users have voted on at least 100 of them.
