When Do Transactions Fail?

Do times of high transaction volume lead to more transaction failures? Create a visualization that shows the relationship between transaction volume and the success rate of transactions throughout the month of December. Are there any noticeable patterns to when transactions are more likely to fail?

    • Note that data is available only from the 8th of December to the 31st of December.

Looking at the chart we can see that there is a correlation between high transaction volume and failed transactions during the 9th, 13th, and 14th of December. However, after the 15th the number of failed transactions is below 1M (except for 28th and 29th when it went slightly above 1M).

There is a clear pattern on the 13th where most of the transactions had failed. Quick research showed that on that day Solana network had a DDoS attack, but it seems the network had mitigated the issue since then.

This Volume vs transaction failed and succeeded chart doesn't give us any conclusive evidence to say higher volumes always cause a higher percentage of failures (obviously absolute values should be higher as shown below) although after 6.2M point onwards it seems like two percentages are converging which means failure rate is getting higher with volume but for the entire month and for other low volumes that's not evident.

Interestingly, the hourly scale shows some evidence of a tendency of a higher failure rate of transactions when the transaction volumes are higher.

To conclude, in the macro-level (daily scale) it's not clearly evident that the higher volume of transaction has a correlation to higher number of failed transactions but if we dig deep into micro-level (hourly) there are evidences that higher the volume higher the chances of getting failed transactions. especially when it gets more than 300K transactions per hour.
