Definition - FLOW & NBA Top Shot

Flow is a fast, decentralized, and developer-friendly blockchain, designed as the foundation for a new generation of games, apps, and the digital assets that power them. Flow aims to create many subdivisions of its network to allow for the total work to be split across nodes, with each node only validating a subset of the transactions. Today, in addition to NBA Top Shot and CryptoKitties, there are many products launching on Flow.

Let's focus on NBA Top Shot NFTs. NBA Top Shot is an NFT marketplace where sports fans can buy, sell and trade basketball video clips. Launched in 2020, NBA Top Shot is a partnership between the NBA and Dapper Labs, the creators of CryptoKitties. This NFT allows users to buy, sell, and collect NBA NFTs that showcase influential “Moments” minted on the FLOW blockchain. Some Moments are rarer than others, with the rarest versions being worth the most. Consequently, as this report is intending to analyse, probably NBA Top Shot have had a boom during the start of the NBA playoffs this season (mid-april).

    Approach and Methodology

For carrying out the analysis of this report, some steps have been followed to achieve the necessary results for final conclusions.

    • First of all, from the database flow.core.fact_transactions it has been extracted the number of transactions in a daily basis from mid-April to current date. This way it can be analyzed if any slope is generated during the start of the play-offs at the middle of April causing a direct impact on Flow transactions.
    • After that first approach, NBA Top Shots NFT sales have been analysed by filtering the TopShot NFT in the database flow.core.fact_nft_sales.
    • Once that information is collected, it has been also analyzed the holders of NBA Top Shots by classifying them depending on the number of NFTs holding.

    FLOW Transactions

As commented before, below chart shows FLOW volume transactions from April 20 to current date (as the database had no information for related dates prior to April 20).

As it can be observed on the chart, there is no direct impact that can be observed visually at the month of may for the FLOW volume transactions, leading to a primary conclusion that the playoffs did not have a direct impact on the volume of transactions for all FLOW subdivisions.

    NBA Top Shot NFT Sales

After that first approach through the analysis of Flow transactions, next step is to analyze the movement of the NBA Top Shots NFT by analyzing the sales of that NFT from mid-April to current date.

Below chart shows the Top Shot NFT Sales from April 20 to current date as the database had no information for dates below April 20:

As it can be observed, in the particular case of the Top Shot NFT sales there was a boom from the middle of April till the start of May that later on started to stabilize. Thus, this confirms that there was a lot of movement in terms of NBA Top Shot NFT at the start of the Play Offs this season, generating a big impact in the sales of this particular NFT.

Focusing on the type of holders that this particular NFT has, it has been defined three different tiers by classifying them depending on the number of NFTs.

    • n_NFT lower than 10 or equal: Crab
    • n_NFT between 10 and 100: Shark
    • n_NFT Higher than 100: Whales

    Conclusions

With the data provided above, below conclusions can be extracted.

    • As FLOW has a lot of subdivisions, NBA playoffs this season did not have a big impact or any impact that can be analyzed at first sight as there is no remarkable slope during those dates. In fact, FLOW transactions have been increased during this last month of June.
    • Regarding to NBA Top Shot NFT, it is confirming by observing its particular chart that the start of the playoffs this season had a big impact, as there was a peak during mid-april and the start of may that later on has been stabilized during the end of may and this month of june.
    • So, it is confirmed that the playoffs this season have had a direct impact on Top Shot NFT sales operations.
    • By classifying the type of holders of this particular NFT, it can be observed that more of the 50% of those NFTs are from 'Whales' (wallets with more than 100 Top Shot NFT). In my particular opinion this is beneficiary as will lead to more movement of this particualr NFT during the time.
