Open Analytics Vol. II: Environmental Impact Study (NearCrowd)

analyzing NearCrowd's Impact on Near Protocol.

    Introduction

NEAR Crowd is a service that allows people earn NEAR by completing small tasks. While tasks are provided and funded by a centralized entity, called the Requestor, NEAR Crowd significantly limits the power that the Requestor has, and moves the power to the community instead. In particular, while the Requestor provides the specification of what needs to be done in each task, it’s the community that decides whether each task is completed correctly according to this specification. This is achieved by creating a set of rules, checks and balances that are enforced by a smart contract deployed on NEAR. [Source][Image]

    In This Dashboard..

we’re going to investigate how NEAR Crowd performed in terms of Environmental Impact in the NEAR Protocol Ecosystem.

it should be noted that Near Crowd uses an invitation based system to onboard new users so it can maintain the profitability for the current users.

looking at fees charts we can see that in the first month of the operation near crowd nearly accounted half of the fees generated within the Near Protocol and with protocol growing further with the DeFi boom of 2022 it’s share decreased drastically while remaining until late May and afterwards daily fees decreased 50% but this isn’t just happened to NEAR Crowd as overall fees expenditure on NEAR Protocol Decreased.

overall NEAR Crowd accounts for 12.3% of total gas expenditure of the NEAR Protocol.

on the weekly popular contracts we can observe that the activity on NEAR Crowd decreased compared to earlier this year but given with the market sentiments and the bear market and compared to other protocols it’s performing relatively well.

overall NEAR Crowd account for 32.2% of transactions of the NEAR Protocol.

the extensive break down of how NEAR CROWD works can be found here.

but in short each task gets claimed by several people [claim_assignment] and then goes through multiple stages of trial and error by other users so that eventually it gets the approval.

on the chart below we can see the weekly popular activities and also their share of the all the activities within Near Crowd.

Overall since this is a task outsourcing platform the top activity is claiming the task as expected, accounting for 32.1% of all the activity in the Near Crowd.

    Verdicts

Near Crowd is one of the active projects on Near Protocol even before it’s became popular and to this day we can see that it kept it’s impact with daily activity and fee generation on Near Ecosystem. and as we mentioned earlier it has a invitation system to let new users in, other barrier is registration fee of 10 NEAR which if removed can attract much more new users but it would sacrifice the profitability for the current ones.
