What’s tornado cash

Tornado Cash is a service that allows users to make transactions on the Ethereum network more private by pooling together large numbers of transactions and mixing them in a manner that prevents their tracking on the blockchain.

What’s this sanctions story all about?

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), a watchdog agency tasked with preventing sanctions violations, on Monday added Tornado Cash to its Specially Designated Nationals list, a running tally of blacklisted people, entities and cryptocurrency addresses. As a result, all U.S. persons and entities are prohibited from interacting with Tornado Cash or any of the Ethereum wallet addresses tied to the protocol. Those who do may face criminal penalties.

What do we analyze?

we will find tornado cash project addresses and study about counts and values of transactions to those addresses and finally look at transactions distribution.

Methodology

finding addresses in crosschain database address labels table where project name is tornado cash and joining these via ethereum transactions table to count and determine volumes in different time frames as below :

charts above is clear to read

but whats interesting is we can see in last month or quarter tornado router got most transaction count and volume yet in whole last year the wallet “tornado cash 100 eth” received more than others

now lets take a look at transactions distribution :

As above charts tell us , most of receiving amounts was between 1 to 10 eth by over 100K transactions and after that is transactions by 0.1 to 1 ethereum worth.
