NEAR Gas Guzzlers

What contracts are users spending the most gas on to use? How has this changed over the past week? Past month?

    What is NEAR?

NEAR is a user-friendly and carbon-neutral blockchain, built from the ground up to be performant, secure, and infinitely scalable. In technical terms, NEAR is a layer one, sharded, proof-of-stake blockchain built with usability in mind. In simple terms, NEAR is blockchain for everyone.

A simple way to think about NEAR is as a cloud-based infrastructure, as the ones currently available from major tech companies. However, instead of being controlled by a single entity, the NEAR cloud is supported by independent people running their own infrastructure around the world.

So, instead of a company-operated cloud, NEAR is a community-operated cloud.

In a nutshell, there are 3 main actors interacting to form the NEAR ecosystem:

    1. The users, developing and consuming services in the NEAR network.
    2. The blockchain, working as the persistent storage for the network.
    3. The validators, operating the computers (a.k.a. nodes) that form the decentralized network.

We can see 68.8% of gas used by top 20 contracts belongs to Aurora.

Also 69.3% of paid transaction fees belongs to Aurora.

    Analyze Past Week

On following two charts I have shown gas used by these top 20 contracts over past week. On the left chart we can see daily gas used by these contract and on the right chart we can see cumulative gas used by these contract.

The highest gas used in past week by these contracts was on July 21. We can see users have spent 17.94M gas on Aurora by the end of the week.

    Analyze Past Month

The following chart shows gas used by these contract over the past month.

We can see high spikes in gas usage from July 15 to July 21.

Also we can see number of developed contract on NEAR was high during same period. Specially on 19 July by 1274 contract and on 21 July by 1276 new contracts.

    Method

In this dashboard we will look at contracts which users spending the most gas on to use and we will see how has this changed over time.

To do this analysis I have used flipside_prod_db.mdao_near.transactions table and sum up gas_used to find what contracts have the most gas used.

To get gas_used in correct format I have divided it by 1e12 and to get transaction fee in actual amount in NEAR I have divided transaction_fee by 1e24.

    Analyze top contracts

The following charts represent 20 contracts that users have spend the most gas to use them.

We can see NEAR users have spent the most gas and transaction fee to use Aurora.

Aurora is an Ethereum Virtual Machine created by the team at the NEAR Protocol, delivering a turn-key solution for developers to operate their apps on an Ethereum-compatible, high-throughput, scalable and future-safe platform, with low transaction costs for their users.

    Gas

When you make calls to the NEAR blockchain to update or change data, the people running the infrastructure of the blockchain incur some cost. At the end of the day, some computers somewhere process your request, and the validators running these computers spend significant capital to keep these computers running.

Like other programmable blockchains, NEAR compensates these people by charging transaction fees, also called gas fees.

The following chart shows gas used by these contracts and number of transactions that users have performed to use these contract over past month.

The following charts shows the same data in big picture from September 2021 till now.

The following charts shows average gas used per transaction by these contracts over the past month.

We can see Zomland.near has the highest gas used per transaction in over the past month.

Second contract that users have spent the most gas per transaction to use is client.bridge.near.

    Conclusion

    • Aurora that is an Ethereum Virtual Machine for the NEAR Protocol has 68.8% of gas used between top 20 contract.

    • 69.3% of paid transaction fees between top 20 contracts belongs to Aurora.

    • The highest gas used in past week by top 20 contracts was on July 21.

    • Users have spent 17.94M gas on Aurora by the over the past week (from July 21 to July 27).

    • there are some high spikes in gas usage by top 20 contracts from July 15 to July 21.

    • Zomland.near has the highest gas used per transaction in over the past month.

    • Next contract that users have spent the most gas per transaction to use is client.bridge.near.
