What makes a Top Shots moment valuable? (Part I)
Create an analysis on NBA Top Shots moments and attempt to uncover any correlations between a specific category and sales volume.
Introduction: NBA Top Shots is a popular NFT project on the Flow layer 1 blockchain. The NFTs are “moments”, which are officially NBA/WNBA licensed video clips. NFTs are released by purchasing Moment NFT packs. Each moment has a different play type (i.e. Rim, Steal, Assist, etc…). The purpose of this analysis is to determine the impact of the play type on sales.
Methods:
- Used the
flow.core.fact_nft_sales
table to determine Top Shot NFT sales wherenft_collection = 'A.0b2a3299cc857e29.TopShot'
. - Used
flow.core.dim_topshot_metadata
to determine play type. - Ignored ‘Dunk/Layup' and '2 Pointer' play types since <0.1% of Top Shot NFTs.
Caution: Most Top Shot NFTs and NFT Sales are missing Play Type data in flow.core.dim_topshot_metadata
table.

Despite Rim play type accounting for 40% of NFTs, it only accounts for 36% of total Top Shot sales.
Rim play types are the most frequently sold and the amount of daily sales of each type appear to be correlated.
Steals have the highest median price, while Handle, which is the lowest number of NFTs, also sells for the cheapest.
More than 60% of users have sold a Rim NFT, and over 40% have
Top Shot prices have crashed since April. Interestingly, Handles had some pretty high median sales prices in April.
