OSMOSIS - Governing the Cosmos
INTRODUCTION
The Cosmos network is not only a Proof of Stake blockchain network but also one that utilizes on-chain governance. In order for the blockchain to continually upgrade and improve over time, community members will coordinate formally on-chain and informally off-chain to participate in discussions and debates surrounding the trade-offs of specific changes.
What kind of changes are made via on-chain governance with Cosmos? Right now, text-based signalling proposals are when a text-based description of a change is shared with the network to describe the problem and potential solution the proposer is suggesting. This could be a poll or announcement.
Secondly, parameter changes or software upgrade proposals are technical changes to how the network runs, ideally, that will not halt or disrupt the network in a significant way in terms of downtime.
Once a parameter change or software upgrade proposal is voted on and passes all conditions it will need to be integrated into a new version of the Cosmos network software by validators while the previous working version continues to run. This is signalling that a switch will occur. Once more than 2⁄3 of the validators download this new version and signal they are ready to make the switch the rest of the network is expected to do the same.
And this is how you would have seen the first versions of the Cosmos Network get upgraded all the way to the current version today!

OSMOSIS
ANALYSIS
There are a few extremely active users, most of voters on Cosmos are comparatively less active in terms of voting frequency. The distribution of voter activity appears to be positively-skewed, with the average number of votes per voter influenced by few number of very active voters. Our observation indicates that total 65% voters lies in the category of 1-5 votes with total count being more than 78k for this category. When considering the engagement level of voters median of 3 is a fair enough value. The votes count decreases as number of voters increases and vice -versa. Average votes are 6 in number. Our analysis of voter activity on the Cosmos chain shows that over 65% of voters have made between 1 and 5 votes, accounting for over 148,000 voters.
ANALYSIS
In April of 2022, we can see an uptrend in voter activity showing many new users are joining the platform . Majority of new voters on Cosmos joined during April of 2022. Flow of new voters are continuous Voters count are sporadic with ups in some weeks & downs in the other week showing a very few new users have joined the platform. Even after the slowdown in the number of new users, the total trend is still bullish as demonstrated by the cumulative graph of new users over time. Voter activity is not stable in all weeks with some weeks having very few activity and others having as many as 50,000 active voters
ANALYSIS
More than 65% of all proposals either have over 30,000 votes or under 2,500 votes. The datas are sporadic , showing a wide variation in the number of votes received 65% votes account to 32 votes only, showing that COSMOS have a small count of proposals. We can understand why this typical proposal size is there in terms of number of votes by analysing the parameter median The average number of votes is slightly asymmetrical due to a few proposals that have an unusually high number of votes.
Add Text HereAround 65% of voters have made between 1 and 5 votes.
- There are 48 total proposals on Cosmos.
- The typical users has made about 3 votes.
- The bulk of new users on Cosmos came around April of 2022 although there are still anywhere from 700-7K new users each week which varies greatly.
- Every since April of 2022 the amount of active users on Cosmos is pretty large seeing heights of over 50K, although some weeks there is zero highlighting some weeks have not activity at all.
- 43.8% of proposals have over 30K votes, while 22.9% have below 2.5K
- On weeks where there are new proposals there tends to be roughly 1-3 although usually closer to 1.
- The voters on Cosmos went from making up only 12% of active users to making up over 50% of active user by the current date.
ANALYSIS
The average number of votes is significantly higher than the median. revealing the fact that the typical voter's level of engagement, can be analysed by stating that it is not heavily influenced by a few extremely active users. This suggests that the median is a better way of analysis representation AROUND 25% of votes have been casted between the range of 1-5 votes with approximately 50% of total voters casting are less than 10 votes. Our analysis of voter activity on the Osmosis chain depicts that there is a single voter with 337 votes changing the overall scenario of the graph .
ANALYSIS
By analysing the above graph & datas we can say that there was a rise in the voters activity on OSMOSIS chain in APRIL month of 2022 with 60,000 count but with time it decreased to 30000 in a week and remained stable. After march 2022 , maximum new voters joined the platform although it became stable with a range of 700-1000 new user. The total number of users are increasing at a slow pace.
Our analysis of voter activity on the Osmosis chain over time reveals that even when, there was a downward trend in new unique voters, the total number of voters seems to remain consistently increasing with time . with time, the voters engagement had decreased as no new users are joining like before . From JANUARY 2022 to MARCH 2022 we can see cumulative voters graph rising at a high speed. Maximum unique voters were found on 28th MARCH & 18th APRIL . Maximum new voters are seen on 28th MARCH 2022 ,
ANALYSIS
after analysing we can state that about 226 proposal received less than 2500 & more than 20,000 votes , the distribution is uneven which we can observe as average number of votes is higher than the median , Majority of proposals falls at either the higher or lower end of the voting graph , which indicates that both the parameters are important in analysing the proposal size. Highest voted proposal received more than 50,000 votes suggesting decent amount of proposal are being voted by a bulk of users showing involvement in the platform anda good distribution pattern. 40% of proposal receiving 20,000 votes. & 27% receiving less than 2,500 votes.
ANALYSIS
We can analyse by stating that majority of new proposals occurred from JANUARY 2022 to JULY 2022 currently also a remarkable count new proposals are being released . 2-7 average proposals are being submitted weekly . the graph of cumulative mew proposals are showing a constant upward trend only implying the release of new proposals constantly . the user activity on osmosis show uneven graph with 95% on few days & approx. 75% on the other , showing new proposal as a continuous process.
Add Text HereRoughly 50% of voters have cast less than 10 votes and 50% of cast more than 10 votes.
- Over the last several months there have been roughly 30K unique voters each week.
- The New voters on Osmosis has really begun to slow down over the last couple months at anywhere from 700-1000 weekly.
- Nearly 40% of proposals have over 20K votes on them.
- There tends to be anywhere from 2-7 new proposals weekly.
- Over the last several months about 75% of active users are also voters.
- Overall the cumulative proposals over time has been going up at a consistent rate highlighting that new proposals are continuously being voted on on Osmosis.

METHOD
In this dashboard we will be discussing the different parameters from COSMOS with the help of OSMOSIS & TERRA .WE HAVE DONE A COMPARATIVE STUDY TO SEE THE IMPACT ON COSMOS :-
Voter activity and proposal engagement for the Cosmos & Osmosis,
Analyze the data over time to check the progress and changes in governance performance on each chain
Comparing the metrics across each chains
To identify the data from multiple sources for each chain,
Identify patterns and trends in governance participation.
Analyze the voter and proposal metrics
Search most active chain in terms of governance engagement & will compare the voter activity and proposal engagement metrics across the chains .
For this we will be using these tables :-
cosmos.core.fact_governance_votes
osmosis.core.fact_governance_vote
sterra.core.fact_governance_votes
CONCLUSION
It is visible that Osmosis had more active governance among all the chains in terms of proposals and voter.
In terms of proposals, Osmosis has an average of around 15k votes per proposal, while on Cosmos it is 25K. Cosmos chain has the highest level of participation, with 223,000 unique voters and an average proposal receiving 37,000 votes. The Osmosis chain has a moderate level of participation, with 210,000 unique voters and an average proposal receiving 16,000 votes. While the Terra chain has the lowest level of participation, with only 3,680 unique voters and an average proposal receiving 224 votes. The analysis also showed that Cosmos and Osmosis have peaks of high engagement on specific proposals While Terra reached its peak in July of 2022 and has been declining rapidly after that. Osmosis has by far the most active voters, with over 50% of its users making over 10 votes, while Terra and COSMOS have 91.5% & 65% of their voters making between 1 and 5 votes .Governance activity on Cosmos and Osmosis chains hit its peak in April/May of 2022, and has been declining since. There is a lack of participation on the Terra chain. The data also shows that all chains have been fluctuating over the past months, Cosmos has the most voters per proposal. Both Osmosis and Cosmos have 2-7 new proposals per week, Terra only has around 1 proposal per week on weeks where there are any new proposals. but Osmosis has that amount every single week, while Cosmos has a handful of weeks with no new proposals at all. Finally, when it comes to the percentage of active users who are also voters, Osmosis has the largest with 75% consistently, while Cosmos follows closely at around 50% and Terra only has around 10%. Overall, Osmosis has the most active governance, likely due to its consistent amount of active voters, new voters, and new proposals week after week for countless months Cosmos lacks in having as many proposals as Osmosis and a handful of weeks with no activity. This dashboard is created to analyse the importance of voter engagement in the governance process and the need for the communities and project teams to explore strategies for increasing voter participation, understanding the cause of low engagement, and how to maintain or increase the engagement on the long term. Voting power is well distributed in COSMOS & OSMOSIS but in TERRA the distribution is centralized .
TERRA
ANALYSIS
The reason behind low voter activity is likely due to Terra 2.0 being recently launched, many of the users probably have not had much time to vote or have become voters recently.
On Terra, most of the voters ,about 61.5%, have only made one vote, recording for 2264 voters. Most of the other voters have made between 1 and 5 votes, The average number of votes is inclined due to a few large voters, so the median is a more perfect representation of the unique voter.
ANALYSIS
Currently, we can see an irregular trend on TERA there have been around 70-100 new users and there are days when there are no new users at all. On some weeks there are as highs as 600 new users. The number of new weekly voters on Terra are quite inconsistent. Similar to new users, the weekly active users follow a similar trend, with some days where the active voters are as high as 200-400 active users& on other days there are no active voters. with passing time the count of new users on terra are growing & we hope it will keep on growing in the coming future.
ANALYSIS
There are very few proposals on terra on TERRA , there are only 38 proposals with 80% of proposals being between 0 and 300 This indicates that there are relatively few proposals overall on Terra, similar to Cosmos. The median is a better parameter to estimate the unique number of votes for a proposal on Terra The average number of votes count are greater than the median count , reflecting the inclination of the graph .
ANALYSIS
TERRA is not like the other chains, a very few users are voters also. About 10% of active users each week being voters. Cumulative count of the number of proposals deployed over time are showing an upward trend. The range of new proposals are from 1-6 weekly .In some weeks there are no proposals at all or 1 or 2 proposal are visible on some days .
ANALYSIS
On Cosmos and Osmosis, the voting power is well-distributed among different validators meaning that they are more decentralized than Terra. Allnodes.com has almost 45.6% of voting staked $LUNA and its voting power is way more than validators. The centralization of Voting-Power in Terra is way greater than Osmosis and Cosmos and this is not nice at all. There are 175 active count of validators in Cosmos, 150 in Osmosis and 130 in Terra.
On the above charts, we can see the distribution of voting-power among these active set validators.
