Realms vs Snapshot

Building off previous recent bounties on Realms and Snapshot, create a dashboard that shows how Realms and Snapshot are growing and used in comparison to one another. Feel free to build off previous bounty work on these platforms. What trends do you see between governance behavior between the two chains? Does a platform seem to capture more market share of its users on their respective chain than the other? What seems to influence voting behavior on each platform? Does one platform have more proposals and voting opportunities than the other? Are whales more powerful on Realms or on Snapshot? How can each platform become more decentralized?

    Introduction

For this analytics i compared Realms to Snapshot in diffrent ways and im gonna show you how they performed comparing to each other. Here are some metrics that i analyzed:

    • Realms and Snapshot All Stats
    • Daily Number of Unique Voters Snapshot vs Realms
    • Daily Number of Votes Snapshot vs Realms
    • Daily Number of Proposals Snapshot vs Realms
    • Realms and Snapshot Market Share by User on Their Chains
    • Realms and Snapshot Whale Power
    • Realms Top 10 DAOs by Votes and Voters
    • Snapshot Top 10 Spaces by Votes and Voters
    • How can each platform become more decentralized?

All the data that you are going to see are from flipside data and since December 2021

    What is Realms?

Realms provides a platform for builders on Solana to create a DAO, manage their members, vote on proposals, and allocate their treasury. Whether you are running a multisig, NFT community DAO, or community token DAO, Realms has the tools and integrations to help your community flourish.

    What is Snapshot?

Snapshot is a decentralized voting system. It provides flexibility on how voting power is calculated for a vote. Snapshot supports various voting types to cater to the needs of organizations. Creating proposals and voting on Snapshot is user-friendly and does not cost gas as the process is performed off-chain.

In short, Snapshot is an off-chain gasless multi-governance client with easy to verify and hard to contest results.

    Methodology

I used Flipside data and Ethereum.core and Solana tables to analyze the data that i needed.

I used solana.core.fact_proposal_votes , solana.core.fact_transactions tables to analyze Realms data and ethereum.core.ez_snapshot table for Snapshot.

Because there is multiple platforms on solana tables i filtered realms data with :

    where governance_platform = 'realms' .

    Observations

    • Snapshot had the highest number of voters on April 15th 2022 and Realms had the highest number of voters on June 20th 2022
    • Snapshot had the most votes on April 15th 2022
    • Looks like Number of votes directly related to number of voters, more voters=more votes
    • Snapshot had the highest number of proposals on Dec 13th 2021 and it had pretty much the same number on April 29 2022
    • April 14 15 16 were good days for Snapshot
    • Recently in August 2022 the number of Snapshot voters suddenly rised
    • After April 29th 2022 Number of Snapshot proposals got a down trend and slowly dropped

In overall Snapshot has more votes, voters, proposals than Realms and more users interacting with it; Lets say its more popular.

The spikes in votes and voters have reasons, For example the spike on April 15th 2022 for Snapshot was because of beginning of Arbitrum Odyssey campaign that users should selected 14 of 64 platforms from 14 separated pool.

and the spike of Realms on June 20th was because of margin call of largest user of Solend that team made a DAO proposal to get control of his wallet and balance the debt

    Realms and Snapshot Whale Power

    • For this section i calculated top 10 voters by vote power(Whales) in both snapshot and realms then i got percentage with (COUNT(DISTINCT WHALE) / COUNT(DISTINCT VOTER)) * 100 from all the voters in that platform

Looks like Realms Whales have more power than Snapshot Whales and it means they have more control on Realms market than Snapshot whales on Snapshot Market

How can each platform become more decentralized?

Undeniably, the term “decentralized” plays a core role in blockchain applications. But what does it mean exactly? Most apps nowadays run on networks that are controlled by a central authority. Social media platforms, banks, and streaming services, for example, store your data on centralized servers. When you use these applications, a request is sent to their servers, and the response is returned to you if your credentials such as your username and password are correct. While this way of centralizing online exchanges between the provider and consumer is efficient, it results in massive volumes of user data, often personal and private, controlled by a few very large corporations. The fact that your personal information is in the hands of a big tech corporation like Google and Amazon who are also profiting off it, means that that information is exposed to breaches and intrusions. \n These flaws in data privacy in centralized networks increased interest in privacy-preserving solutions, such as blockchain technology and dApps. Like many other current blockchain solutions, dApps aim to cut out the middleman and “decentralize” the ownership of the application. If you currently book a ride on Uber, you don’t just pay the person who is driving you from A to B. There is an intermediary party that takes a sizeable cut out of this exchange, which makes the service more expensive for users while making drivers earn less than when they would drive independently. With dApps, this need for an intermediary party is eliminated. All transactions, in whatever form, are done between the provider and consumer and are registered on the blockchain.

    Conclusion

    • Realms and Snapshot Average vote per voter are almost the same
    • Snapshot is much more popular than Realms and has bigger stats than Realms
    • Realms Whales have more power than Snapshot Whales and i think it is because Realms is smaller than Snapshot
    • Snapshot had a spike on April 15th 2022 and Realms had a spike on June 20th 2022 and i mentioned the reasons of them earlier
    • Grape and The Imperium of Rain are popular in Realms DAOs and cake.eth is popular in Snapshot Spaces
    • Snapshot has a bigger market share than Realms
